Sweet and Not-So-Sweet Moments

Enjoy last month's pictures of a windy Saturday afternoon spent flying our dragon kite.

And now enjoy a day in my life. McKay typically wakes up around 6am and wants up at 6:30. By this time he's usually woken up Easton who comes to tell us McKay wants out of the crib. Because Easton can get a box of cereal on his own and knows how to find their cartoons, it buys us some wake up time. This morning was no different until they came back up to see us with what looked like the remnants of chocolate ice cream all over their faces. ARGH!!! I was not looking forward to the inevitable mess downstairs. Had they taken the ice cream to the living room in front of the tv on the carpet and couches? Could I be hopeful that they kept it in the kitchen or would it be a trail from the kitchen to the living room?

I went downstairs and didn't see a thing in the living room. Sigh! I headed to the kitchen in dread only to be shocked! In a fabulous way! The melting container was sitting on the table with a couple drops of ice cream around it. That was it!!! Half of the half gallon was eaten, but they'd even put the lid back on it! I was a bit stumped because I didn't see any spoons anywhere and although their hands were covered, the ice cream itself didn't look like it'd been pawed. I chalked it up to a very blessed moment and went about my morning with the unresolved spoon issue in the back of my mind. It was all just too good to be true, ya know?

This weekend was Stake Conference. I dread the Sunday meeting with the boys because it's two hours long plus a half hour tacked on for getting early so we were in the pews and not on the hard chairs in the back. It's so much harder to corral the kids in the back! Luckily, we got a good seat and settled in. Ryan said it looked like I'd packed the entire toy box into my bag plus a variety of snacks which is pretty true. A gal's gotta be prepared with a multitude of options to redirect little boy energies!

Our session began at 1pm which is pretty horrible for a 2 yr old needing a nap. McKay did alright in the end but I just had to share a cute moment. First a little update on McKay. He's big into trying to engage us in conversations, even if it's just to say the same thing over and over and over. This is the phase where you feel like your name is being taken in vain it's repeated so many times for no apparent reason other than to hear it spoken aloud. Many times a day I feel like I'm going to go bonkers because if I don't acknowledge his initial, "Mom?", he'll keep saying it louder and louder til I answer. And then it's just the beginning of a repetitive conversation.

Anyhow, back to the cute moment. McKay was eating a graham cracker and in a bit of a silly mood. I was wearing this dress that has kind of an empire waist wrap around panel - hence, the panel covers the emerging baby belly. McKay patted my tummy and said, "Mom-mom, a baby 'ummy?" I said yes and he continued eating his cracker. Then he lifted the panel of the dress and placed the rest of his cracker under it on my tummy and said, "A baby c'acker. I share." I just had to laugh! But then he wouldn't knowingly let me remove the soggy edged cracker, of course, and would check on it now and then to see if it was gone. I'm not sure if he was checking to see if the baby could eat it from there or if he was just trying to keep me from removing it. Either way, what a cute kid sharing with his baby sister! You just never know what they understand at each age, but this was the first time McKay really seemed to get that there was a baby in there. Very fun!

After conference, we scrambled to get dinner ready for the missionaries. They were checking up on some goals we were setting and let us feed them. As I was looking for the drip pan for the griddle, I found the mysteriously missing spoons from the boys' chocolate ice cream breakfast feast. In a lower drawer, there were two chocolate covered spoons and some melted mess. Still such a minor mess it barely merits mention - but I was glad to have the mystery solved!!! HURRAY! Now I just wish I could now figure out the mystery behind having well behaved children when in public or when company is here. Aaaaack!!!

Another recent McKay-ism is his tattling. It's hard not to laugh at since he's so emphatic. If Easton does something to hurt him or that he doesn't like, he'll come running to say, "Mom-mom, Eas'on did dat!" and I'll often not have a clue what happened but a simple, "I'm sorry that happened, McKay" with a hug often does the trick. I especially have to laugh when Ryan or I tell him to stop doing something and he'll tearfully go tattle on us to the other parent! It's adorable and funny and we don't know how to make him stop or if we want him to just yet.

You Saw the Bow, Huh?

We had our ultrasound and it's a GIRL! Bring on the pink! Finally I'll be able to decorate that yellow room for a girl which is what I anticipated when we moved into this place 3 1/2 yrs ago! HA! Who are we kidding, I am horribly indecisive about any type of decorating and am often paralyzed by what I envision vs. what I can afford. And shopping w/ a 4 and 2 yr old . . . instant paralysis, we just won't go there!

Alright - the morning of was true to form - CRAZY! I misread the directions on the back of the ultrasound referral and took us to the wrong building, Ryan and kids in tow. We would have been on time had it not been for this teensy little error. Since we'd driven separate so he could head off to work afterwards, Ryan sent me off ahead alone but he forgot to remember the building and suite number of the place. As it turned out, it worked out perfectly for me because they do so much measuring of all the baby's parts now that it is a rather long appointment. And we know how well toddlers do in small, confined spaces for any duration past 3 minutes spent opening and browsing every nook and cranny. PHEW! By the time Ryan got there with the boys, the technician had done almost all of the measuring and we just got to do the fun stuff like look at the profile face shots, watch the four chambers of the heart doing their thing, and count those fingers and toes. Thankfully, all is normal. Ryan was a bit exasperated by the time he got there, but the boys would have been bored to tears with anything longer than what they were there for.

I got to tell Ryan it's a girl and he was real excited. He's been wanting baby girls since we were first married because of all those adorable nieces of his. Easton didn't really have much of a reaction but having heard there's a baby girl in there asked the technician, "So you saw the bow on her head, huh?" We all had a good little laugh at that since I'd told the technician that's how Easton told me we'd know girl v boy. Due date is between Nov 2 and Nov 5.

Our baby girl was doing all sorts of acrobatics such that Easton kept insisting that she was moving around so much because she wanted to come out and play. We said she had to grow some more inside but he wasn't really buying it. Taking a 4 yr old to an ultrasound is truly a lot of fun! A 2 yr old, not so much, but not so bad with Ryan there to wrangle him!

We're thrilled to know more about our coming family attraction! My mom is excited to start envisioning the heirloom blessing dress she's going to make. She was throwing terms at me I mostly didn't have a clue about - tatting, smocking . . . I just know it will be beautiful and I'm excited to have such a neat keepsake. She will even embroider the baby's name and birthdate on the inside slip which we'll add more names and dates down the line. Very cool!

Let the name games begin! We've got some doozies in our family lines that probably won't be used, but they make us smile. Elfrieda, Talulah, Lucretia . . . but first, I gotta get those smelly camping clothes in the washer! We love to camp and couldn't let an 80/60 degree weather weekend in June pass us by uncamped!!! For those who haven't done a Virginia hot, humid summers where it literally doesn't cool off at night and there aren't any real mountains to escape to, this could very well be the last camping trip of the summer. Especially as I consider sleeping another night on a cot and those midnight potty runs! So glamorous - sorry to over share.

Lorry & David's Wedding

Two weeks ago, Ryan let me fly home to be at my sister's wedding. All ten Bare kids were able to make it home! To see the captions, click on the slide show. My fave pics are of the antler prank! A CLASSIC for dad and the Bare boys!

Lorry and David met and began dating at BYU-I a year and a half ago. He's close to getting his accounting degree and Lorry has 2 years left in Elementary Ed. The beautiful bride wore my wedding dress which mom had so wonderfully preserved! I really loved my dress so it was good to see it get some fresh air again!

I had not been to a temple wedding in awhile and wished Ryan could be there with me. I was a fish out of water without my best friend and the kiddos all weekend! Not sure what to do with myself! But the temple sealing ceremony was beautiful and reminded me how blessed I am to know that I can be with my Ryan for eternity and not just 'til death do us part!

This was the first time I got to meet two of my nieces, Edison and Emelia. My brother Chad's kids are so adorable and even splits when it comes to looking like him or Amber - Amazing! They know how to work a camera!

Two hours before the back yard reception was set to begin, a menacing little storm started with wind and light rain. This was a big deal because my family had worked really hard for two months getting the yard ready! Miraculously, about a half hour into the reception, the entire scene calmed down. I had said a fervent prayer up in my parents' room for it to somehow pass us by and was so touched by a few others at the reception who had taken the time to do the same. As we came to find out, the storm had split in two as it rolled through town with our house being in the calm zone. I'm no weather officianado, but I've never heard of this happening!

Cletus the Fetus?

I was telling Easton today in the car that we may find out next week if we're having a boy or a girl. He got a good giggle out of me by telling me how we'll know - very scientific! He said we'll know it's a girl because she'll have a bow on her head. A boy won't.

Then I started telling him that the doctor would be able to show us pictures of the baby inside my tummy. He reiterated we'd know by there being a bow or not in the pictures. I told him I thought the girls didn't get bows until they were born and he said that wasn't right.

There you have it, a four year old's explanation of discovering a baby in utero's gender. Either way, Uncle Tom, if it's a boy - he still won't be Cletus the Fetus. I'm sure Jenn and Torey would have given that name a fair shake if they weren't having a girl. Right, Jenn?
